So without further ado: *2010 SCHNITZER PRIZE WINNERS* FIRST PRIZE: Richard The (G) SECOND PRIZE: Jaekyung Jung (G) THIRD PRIZE: Sam Kronick 10 Last Friday I had the chance to check out all three recipients art as part of the annual exhibit of Schnitzer Prize winners at the Wiesner Student Art Gallery in the MIT Student Center. (Photos provided by Richard The) Richard is a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab and is a part of an art collective called The Green Eyl, named after three of its five members (Richard The, Gunnar Green, and Frdric Eyl, + Dominik Schumacher Willy Sengewald). As part of the Schnitzer exhibit, Richard showcased three of his pieces. The first, Appeel, was a large wall covered in peelable orange stickers. Viewers were allowed to peel, replace, and take the stickers as pleased, resulting in an ever-changing amalgam of graffiti, text, and images, all made from the presence or absence of the stickers. The wall has been displayed at a bunch of venues, including the famous Ars Electronica. When it was shown at Ars Electronica, some people even took the stickers with them and replaced them thousands of miles away. Richard told me that when he was in London, he found one of the stickers on a street sign. Its a kind of viral art, so to speak. Another of Richards pieces was Omnivisu, a temporary installation atop an interchange station in Berlin. The piece allowed an observer to look into a box which would then project the observers eyes onto the exterior windows of the currently-vacant office space which had once been owned by Narva, a light-bulb manufacturer and company that was part of Berlins new economy boom. The piece gave a literal face to the building that gazed out over the city at night, using the eyes of the citys inhabitants. Thats pretty cool. Richards last piece (not pictured here, unfortunately) was a giant mural assembled on a plaza using pennies, which was really beautiful and intricate. After the mural was unveiled, people were allowed to interact with the piece much like Appeel, but apparently a concerned citizen later called the police, who then came over and swept the piece away in an odd effort to preserve it. (Photos provided by Jaekyung Jung) Jaekyung is a student in MITs graduate program in visual arts (formerly VAP, now ACT). He showed two pieces at the Schnitzer exhibit. The first, an untitled video piece (or at least, I didnt catch the title) is a six-screen video of Jaekyung listening to comedy programs in six different languages (as rated by his friends). The video shows his reactions to the programs. For most, the expressions are subtlemore reflections of an appreciation that something funny is happening without understanding the precise nature of the joke. In the bottom left screen, Jaekyung listens and reacts to a Korean comedy program, and as a native Korean, you can immediately see the difference in reactions. Jaekyung told me that the piece reflects how he feels when trying to integrate in America. Headphones are provided so that you can listen along. I wish there was a mirror, though, so that the observer could compare his/her reactions to that of Jaekyung while listening along. Jaekyungs second work was a performance art piece he did for a VAP class back in September of 2008. He and friends walked around Boston with a drum bearing the phrase HIT HERE IF YOU FEEL VICTIMIZED. Anyone who wanted to could come up and take a whack at the drum. I asked Jaekyung about the people he met. He told me that most struck the drum in good fun rather than in frustration, although there were a few who stood out, including a homeless veteran who, despite his good demeanor, may have felt a greater emotional relation to the piece. So Im a bit biased, of courseboth because its wonderful to see an MIT undergraduate doing art (and for fun!) and because, as a former architecture major, Im acquaintances with Sam. Sams work is really awesome. Walkinghouse, which he did as part of N55, an artists collective in Copenhagen, is a modern day Conestoga wagon. Its solar powered, surprisingly roomy, and even has a wood-burning stove. It reminds me of something Buckminster Fuller would dream up. Sams other piece (his Senior thesis) was the Microdot, an impromptu micro-nation he organized this past spring on MITs McDermott Dot. In addition to founding the nation, he and fellow friends used the opportunity to conceive of a novel culture, history, and politic, based on Sams previous studies and various precedents. The Wright’s marriage is a perfect example of the effects of traditional gender roles. Mr. Wright represents the traditional role of male dominance in marriage by controlling Minnie’s life through isolation and removing anything that would bring her happiness. Although Minnie became submissive in order to conform to the demands of her husband, she took back control when she murdered her husband in the same fashion as he did to her pet canary (1116). Furthermore, the men’s dismissal of the women’s opinions prevents them from finding evidence of a mo tive to convict Mrs. Wright. Cades Cove contains a lot of history as well as beautiful sites. The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most costly battles of the Pacific theatre of WWII. The fighting was fought in February and March, 1945. About 6,800 U. S. Marines and other military personnel lost their lives in seizing the island from the Japanese. The Japanese losses were estimated at more than 21,000. The American victory at Iwo Jima provided American air units with the first base inside Japanese territory. This allowed American Bombers to cause major damage to Japans industrial factories. On the 15 of June, 1944, the Iwo Jima was being bombarded by the navy. Along with Heavy Air raids from the Air Force. So technically the attack started 9 months before the actual Invasion. Which put the Marines at a disadvantage, not allowing them to dig in or build foxholes to take cover from enemy fire. The only good thing that came out the ash was that it absorbed some fragments from Japanese artillery. The Japanese heavy artillery in Suribachi was reinforced with steel doors and would only open them to fire, and then would closed them immediately to prevent receiving damage from the Marines and naval gunners. This made it a challenge for American units to destroy the heavily fortified Japanese artillery position. To make things harder for the Marines, the bunkers were connected to tunnel systems so that the Japanese bunkers that got cleared with flamethrowers and grenades were re-occupied by the Japanese troops moving through the tunnels. This tactic used by the Japanese caused many casualties to the Marines, as they walked past the bu nkers they thought were cleared. Didn’t expect to take fire from the enemy. The Marines would cautiously and slowly advance while taking heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Sherlock Holmes Comparing The Veiled Lodger, The Speckled Band and Silver Blaze Essay Sherlock Holmes Comparing The Veiled Lodger, The Speckled Band and Silver Blaze In this essay I am going to compare three Sherlock Holmes stories. Two of the stories involve females as the victims whereas the other doesnt. These two stories also have something to do with loved ones. All three stories are to do with a murder that has happened and are in the same detective, mystery genre. There are a few similarities between two of these stories, The Veiled Lodger and The Speckled Band as both of these stories are about some sort of a murder that has happened. In The Veiled Lodger the victim is only able to come to Holmes when somebody dies, she can no longer protect them as they are dead. This means she is finally able to tell Holmes the whole story. In The Speckled Band the victims sister dies so she has to go to Holmes for help. This makes these two stories quite similar, we can compare these similarities with the differences of Silver Blaze. The Veiled Lodger is about someone, called Mrs Render, coming forward to Holmes about a crime she and her lover committed whilst in the circus. The crime was her lover and Mrs Render plotting and going through with a murder on her husband who she wanted to leave because he was beating her. The plan goes wrong and her lover escapes, leaving Mrs Render with an upset lion who turns on her causing her face so much damage that she now feels she must cover her face at all times. If she hadnt have gone to see Holmes then he would never have solved the crime. Now her lover is dead she can tell the tale. The Speckled Band is about a family from Surrey called the Royletts. The mother dies and leaves her two daughters all her money, but they can only have it when they. The Step-Father must keep it until then. One daughter becomes engaged, then, mysteriously, the night after she has told her Step-Father the good news she is killed. The other daughter finds this suspicious and odd as no-one can find the cause of her sisters death. She goes to Holmes to find out if he can solve the mystery. Silver Blaze is abit different to the other two stories as it is about the abduction of a horse and the murder of its trainer. The police officer accuses the wrong person. After looking closely at the clues and with a little help from Watson, Holmes solves the crime. He finds out that is was actually the horse that killed the trainer because the trainer was trying to injure the horse and jeopardise the horses chances of winning the race. We can compare the victims in both The Veiled Lodger and The Speckled Band. Both victims are female, Mrs Render from The Veiled Lodger and Helen Stoner from The Speckled Band. Mrs Render was once in the circus with her husband, Mr Render. During the story nothing much was given away about Mrs Renders personality except in the past it seems like she used to be a really energetic, outgoing bubbly woman but now she likes to keep herself to herself and not trouble anyone. You could not have a quieter lodger, or one who gives less trouble In the story we find out that her husband was a wife beater maybe this, plus the fact that she wears a veil all the time could have something to do with why she seems to have gone back into her shell. She has been in the circus since she was ten. We also find out that she was once a very beautiful woman but since the accident she has covered her face in a veil and looks thin and ill. Her health, Mr Holmes. She seems to be wasting away. The story doesnt really tell us much about how has felt in the past, it does however tell us how she feels after the accident. Towards the end of the story she tells Holmes that she feels that low about herself she wants to commit suicide. Your life is not your own he said keep your hands off it. Mrs Render has something in common with Helen Stoner, as Helens Step-Father seems to have a really short temper and seems to go completely mad and angry at times and loose control. Helen Stoner is less than thirty years old yet her hair is starting to turn a silver grey colour and her facial expressions seem to be growing old too soon. Her features and figure were those of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature grey, and her expression was weary and haggard. Her family was at one time amongst the richest in England but the last four successive heirs were dissolute and wasteful so eventually there was nothing left. The description at the start of the story tells us that she is very nervous and frightened. She was indeed in a pitiable state of agitation, her face all drawn and grey, with restless, frightened eyes The grey hair at such a young age tells us that she has maybe suffered a stressful life so far. In the past it seems that she didnt or indeed doesnt like the life she living. She also feels extremely isolated. This is something that she has in common with Mrs Render, showing that these two characters are very similar. Maybe both characters are bruised by something that has happened in the past and they both cant seem to get away from it, like it is haunting them. Another set of characters which have similarities are the villains Mr Render and Dr Roylett. The first thing that I noticed about both characters was their fiery tempers. Both characters are uncontrollable in his anger It also seems to me that both men enjoy being around wild or exotic animals. Mr Render owned a circus which had a wild lion and Dr Roylett had his roaming cheetah and baboon. It seems that, from what has been said about Dr Royletts background his life has been up and down. He has taken a medical degree then went out to Calcutta where he set up his own large practice. After robberies at his house in anger he beat his native butler to death and narrowly escaped a capital sentence he was put in prison then returned to England a morose and disappointed man Once his wife died things went even more down hill. The way that these characters are described gives the reader clues to what their personalities are like. At one point Mr Render is described as a huge porcine the reader gets the impression that Mr Render is a large pig like looking man. A commentary ‘The water was deep and it went forever down’ by Tim Winton EssayThe three stories are organised mainly in narrative as the setting is described in the narrative. Even though there is mainly narrative there is still abit of dialogue. The stories have a clear really clear beginning. You dont get confused because its not too complex. When you get into the middle it gets abit more complicated but is still really easy to grip as you have already read the beginning so you have an idea of what is going on. Its a bit more complicated because the narrator is telling us the plot of the crime but also the victim is having flashbacks. Throughout most of the story Watson is the narrator but at times this can change for example when the victim is describing the plot or what has happened. The role of Watson is really important in these stories as the reader is following in Watsons footsteps ad they see and think the same as he does. This is how the reader finds out about each crime and what may have caused it. As Holmes is describing the crime to Watson he is actually telling the reader as well. This is really effective as if Watson wasnt there then the reader wouldnt know what is happening and why it is happening. Also in The Speckled Band Helen Stoners story and her views are, what I think, gets Holmes on the trail of thinking that it was her Step-Father. As she showed Holmes round the room in which her sister was killed Holmes found some rather unusual things which he turns into clues for the murder. For example the bell pulls. Pointing to a thick bell-rope which hung down beside the tassel and a little air vent that was not fastened to an outside wall but was linked to her fathers room. Also the conversation that Holmes has with Watson about the bed being fastened to the floor helps us figure out slowly how Holmes solved the crime. In The Veiled Lodger we gradually find out what has happened by Watson asking Holmes all about the crime and also Holmes asking Mrs Render questions about the night of the murder. After a while it slowly changes to Holmes not asking any questions just Mrs Render telling us herself exactly how things happened. If Holmes didnt but in sometimes and interrupt her Mrs Render would have given us the whole story herself. Throughout Mrs Render telling us the story she uses a lot of first person narrative except where she is describing the people and their reactions. The stories are all detective stories but one is unusual for Holmes as he hasnt been able to solve the crime for along time and still doesnt manage to as his mind is put to rest by Mrs Render telling him. It is one of a few mysteries that Holmes doesnt manage to solve and was genuinely puzzled by. A few clues are given to us highlighting the fact that the stories are of a Victorian melodrama. The way the author uses poison and a club as a murder weapon shows that technology is not at its highest standard, also the way he uses a veiled woman and a lion are also clues. There are elements in The Speckled Band of a gothic story. The way it is set in a dark gloomy place and all three crimes happen at night , strange events happening like Mrs Render having repairs done on a room that didnt need repairing when they are short of money. The use of violence and mystery are involved in the story and the use of the vent could resemble a hidden passage. All throughout the story you find little things that add up to make a gothic story. During the period that these stories were written the general public had a deep resentment against the police as they did not seem to be protecting the public. Also at this very same time the infamous Jack the ripper was loose on the streets. Once Holmes surfaced straight away the public took a liking to him as he did everything that public hoped the police would do. For example solve all the crimes and always defeat evil. At the same time in the Victorian ere the role of women was very different. Women had very few rights and were thought of as lower class. The men had more authority and control over what happened in everything including divorce. If a woman was divorced she was treated like an outcast and people didnt want to know her whereas if a male was divorced it wouldnt matter he would get treated the same. Holmes feels very sympathetic towards the women but wouldnt allow Mrs Render to kill herself. His attitude to Dr Roylett was very different as he seems to enjoy winding him up and does so very easy which shows that he doesnt think much of him. The story which I preferred out of the three was The Speckled Band. I think I preferred this one because were more clues in the story and the reader was finding out about clues the same time as Holmes which means that the reader can even try and solve the mystery for themselves. Also the use of the red herring kept me more interested in the story. I think that the way the author wrote very little about the baboon but then brought it up at that moment in the story was a really effective way as it kept the audience on the edge of their seats as they thought that it was the baboon. I think that was a very clever way of keeping the audience interested. from a clump of laurel bushes there darted what seemed to be a hideous distorted child The use of these words are really effective and help to really create a picture in the readers mind of what the baboon looks like. I also enjoyed the way the author kept the audience in suspense by building up the tension then using the baboon as a false climax. Even though The Speckled Band was my favourite I also liked Silver Blaze for some of the same reasons like the little clues left lying around. straker would not undertake this delicate tendon nicking without a little practice Once the reader reads this their mind thinks back to where we were wondering why Holmes had asked about the sheep. Both these stories kept me interested, The Veiled Lodger wasnt as good but all three stories were better than what I thought they would be.

His eyes tell us that he is mean and that he could kill someone if he has to because he looks like he is full of hate. He has a short moustache and a goatee which gives him a ghetto look. His mouth is open slightly with his teeth together which shows he is ready for a fight and may be angry. He has tattoos on his chest, neck and arm depicting that he is very strong. The character is also wearing a white vest with brown baggy trousers. The vest shows us that he wants to show off the size of his muscles to make himself look stronger so that people dont start fights with and they become scared. In his right hand he is holding a modern pistol which would have been cheap and commonly used. He is wearing black trainers and they look quite big and are probably to make us think he is bigger than he actually is and to make him look stronger and scarier which is what he wants us to think. He is looking as if he is sitting on an orange car and he is just about to get up and start walking. The car itself looks mid-to-late nineties, probably in the USA because these are the sort of cars they drove in certain cities. There are four lights at the front, which are all round, and between the lights there is a large radiator grill which makes the car look bigger. The car is probably a convertible with a large boot at the back. The man has one foot on the bumper, one on the floor and he has one hand on the hood of the car as if he is about to get up and start walking towards a fight, in this case towards the camera. The look on his face and the way he is holding the gun makes it look like he is ready to begin a fight and he is confident. Also in the background there are light green blocks with the shadow of a city and some skyscrapers connoting that the game would be set in a large city. Below this main image, there are four smaller screen shots of the game and what happens. The first of these two pictures show two black men, probably friends, riding a yellow motorbike together. They are riding it along the railway tracks showing they are rebellious and there is a train coming behind them and this shows that they are solid and nothing can scare them so they ride a motor bike in front of a train, and pull off some spectacular stunts and make themselves look good. There is also another train passing them showing it is a busy rail line so it is a big dare to ride along it. Next to this image, is another one, but this time showing the same person as in the main picture, but is walking along a street with a white Cadillac parking diagonally across the street as if he had to get ot in a hurry. In the background of this picture, there is a building which looks like a casino with powerful neon lights glaring across the whole city. This connotes it is in a big city, possibly like Las Vegas. In the next picture it is the same person but this time he is running along an alleyway with a police helicopter in the sky and a sub-machinegun in his hand. There is a blue sky telling us that hit is daytime but he is wearing a big black coat and grey trousers so it may be winter. There is a power line going from one building to another showing us that it is urban but there are trees in the background which contradicts the fact that it may be urban, so it may just be a park in the city or a housing block in a rural area. The last picture is showing an orange sunset int eh background with tall trees in the foreground hinting at a rural area and there is a red pickup truck, or 4X4 to the side of the screen. This tells us that in the game the day changes to night and there are several stages between. These pictures tell what is possible in the game. The player can ride motorbikes, drive cars and use weapons, etc. These five images attract the reader because stereotypically men wan to be big and tough and in the game you can do things that you would not do in the real world and most people want to be a rebel at some point. The main picture shows a black man who looks in his twenties who probably has a substantial amount of money, He is probably heterosexual and it is a stereotype as he is twice shown carrying a gun. Below all the rest of this at the bottom of the page there are some logos. The first is a blue Rockstar logo and Rockstar is the producer of the game and is the institution that has put all the money behind it. Then there are the Playstation and Playstation 2 logos and these tell us what console the games are available on. The next is the Interscope Records logo and Interscope is a music company who do urban music and they have probably provided the sound track to the game. The there is the BBFC-18 logo showing us the game is for people aged 18 or over and no one below this age should be able to buy or play it. But however, boys over 13 may wan to play this game because it appeals to them and makes them feel rebellious and cool because they are under 18 and playing on an 18 game. To the right of this there is a yellow Rockstar logo, again symbolising the production company and institution. Starting from the top of the page we see some text saying Rockstar Games Presents. Rockstar obviously want people to recognise that the same people have made all of the other GTA games. If we go down the page slightly we see Grand Theft Auto San Andreas written in two different fonts. The Grand Theft Auto is written in one font similar to that of the previous GTA games which is brand identity. San Andreas is written in a different font in the style of how gangsters had words tattooed on their bodies at that time. Further down the page we have written in a smaller font A Rockstar North Production. This again tells us about Rockstar that they want us to know that they have made it. Then it says in a much bigger font Out Now which makes us really notice it because it is written in white on a black background and it is really big. When we see this it makes us think that we can go to the shop and buy it therefore giving the company more money. Then below the four screen shots it has a web site: www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas. This tells u that we can go to this website to find out more information about this game if we really want to. Below this is some text saying that there is a soundtrack available on Interscope records. This is telling us that if we bought the game and we like the music we could go to a music shop or the Interscope Records website and buy it there. Rights at the bottom of the page there is the legal statement with the copyright statement to the logos and names of the companies involved. Happy 87th Birthday, HarperLee! Last night, I found my sixteen-year-old daughter in bed   a full hour early. In her hands was Harper Lees classic novel  To Kill a Mockingbird. I want to see what is happening with Scout. Im worried about her, she explained. My daughter, like millions of other readers, has become enthralled by the coming-of-age story of Scout Finch as she navigates the racially-charged world of Alabama in the 1930s. Yesterday, April 28, 2013, marked the 87th birthday of Harper Lee, the novels author.  To Kill a Mockingbird  was immediately popular and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. It was an instant critical success as well, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. In 2008, Londons  The Telegraph  named  To Kill a Mockingbird  the greatest novel of all time. The novel, Lees only published work, may not have ever been.   She was struggling to make ends meet in New York, working as a ticket agent for Eastern Airlines. While in the city, she became friends with the composer and lyricist Michael Brown  and his wife, Joy. The three became very close. In December, the Browns gave Lee an astonishing gift: a years salary with a note that read, You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas. Within a year, Lee had completed the first draft of   Mockingbird.   Hot on the heels of Lees Pulitzer was the film being made of her work. The movie was released in 1962 starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.  To Kill a Mockingbird  won three Oscars and was nominated for five more.  In 2003, AFI named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. Our culture has certainly been dominated by viewpoints of those who have written about it, those in the media, and more specifically, those in power. As a society we are all quite aware of the fact that those in power and, therefore, those who have shaped a large part of our society are made up of a majority of white, male, upper class citizens. Yet, as our society is constantly changing, growing and becoming enriched with a diverse people from all over the world who do not share experiences, culture, skin color or even values, we must ask ourselves how productive we are when we teach the culture of the few to the faces of the majority? I, therefore, feel that not only should it be the responsibility of all colleges and universities to teach a wide variety of diverse cultures that encompass the people who make up our society, but it should also b e their duty. America was made by the people and for the people. "People" is the key word we must remember and take notice of. Who is it that makes up our "people", and how can they be represented in our history, our educational institutions and in our society? By understanding the people that encompass the true America and incorporating a knowledge and respect of all cultures we will be more productive as a society and, more importantly, better able to communicate, relate and build relationships, which will enrich our individual lives. The article by Bell Hooks entitled, "Keeping Close To Home: Class and Education" seemed to touch on the issue of incorporating an education that encompasses a variety of people in a profound way. Recognizing the unique perspectives that can be drawn from a diverse people will, eventually, change the once valued American attitude that we must all assimilate to one voice, one common outlook, one moral and educational perspective. In knowing one's past, by naming it and then taking ownership of the past, and by learning about other people's past from an objective point of view we are expanding our sense of history. More than that, we are actively incorporating all different people into our every day lives. Obviously, a greater sense of cultural awareness is not always as easily attainable as we might hope.

The year 1960 turned to be a year for the world to remember. It was not because a war began or it ended. It was the year the music industry was revolutionized. It was when the four men from Liverpool England made the biggest impact in the music scene. The Beatles was born. They stunned the pop culture world and set the mark for music for years.Their personalities, melodies and overwhelming, heart warming charisma graced the airwaves and the crowd. Adults who usually listen to rock and roll music gave in to their music and joined the hype, and were convinced that the group really has chemistry and sense in their melodies and lyrical contents.Convinced was the appropriate word. Needless to say, people of all ages were tuned to the rhythm they were making. Originally formed by John Lennon as The Quarrymen, the group had its share of hardship. Playing only on clubs and small bars, the group stayed. Then they met Paul McCartney and eventually joined by George Harrison. The group toured se veral countries including Scotland to perform their songs. The group was influenced by then rock and roll icon, Elvis Presley who served as their idol. The missing piece of the fab four, Ringo Starr, later joined them in 1962 after the original drummer was fired.They also mourned the death of a former original member who died of brain hemorrhage. The quartet then started touring the European continent. They started playing their tunes in Hamburg, Germany. George Harrison was sent back to England after he was found by the German authorities to be lying. He was found guilty of falsifying the information he gave and was discovered that he is a minor and not qualified to work. Harrison’s deportation was succeeded with arson charges for Paul McCartney after setting a fire in his hotel room. The Hamburg experience was short lived as the members had no choice but to leave German soil.Only John Lennon stayed in Hamburg because of his then fiancee. They all went back to Liverpool and had a sort of reunion and never stopped playing. The group were driven to seek new heights and dreamt of becoming icons too as their idol, Elvis Presley. They came back to Hamburg and this time, they were handled by a manager. The manager looked for bar outlets for their gigs and scheduled them to prominent music fronts across the city. The big act came when the manager brought them to a recording studio and hoped that they land a contract.After this moment, the boys were demoralized when they learned that the studio was not impressed with their music. The group, though were downed, did not succumb to the challenges. The band was on high spirits as they were rewarded as they were signed to a renewable one year contract at EMI. Their recording contract turned out to be an awful one because of the payment they will receive for every album sold. They were only paid a penny for it which was later reduced for albums sold internationally. Members were again saddened by this turn out and n early gave up.They continued to record songs after songs not knowing that their time was nearing and just a moment within their reach. September 1962 was the time of their lives as their single â€Å"Love Me Do† debuted at number 17 on the UK charts and topped the US charts after 18 months of its release. They also recorded their first album and their next 45 songs were chart toppers in the United Kingdom. THE BEATLES' DOMINANCE OF THE MUSIC CHARTS Throughout their career, the Beatles established milestones that assured their place in the history of popular music.They had seventeen number-one singles in the United Kingdom, twenty number-one singles in the United States, fifteen number-one albums in the United Kingdom, and nineteen number-one albums in the United States. They spent 1,278 weeks on the British charts (more than any other act), 175 weeks at number one on the British charts (more than any other act), and in 1965 produced the first British album to debut at number one (Help! ). They had the highest album sales in the United States of any group ever, with close to 107 million albums sold.Further, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) remains the United Kingdom's all-time best-selling album. Almost close to 60,000 fans packed the stadium (Coleman). Breaking records in the music industry became a habit for the band. It was recognized as major feat for the group’s leap for maturity and seemed to be headed for supremacy and immortality.â€Å"When all was said and done, the Beatles charted 20 Number One singles in the States – a number even greater than runner-up Elvis Presley’s 17 chart-toppers. For such feats of sales and airplay alone, the Beatles can unassailably be regarded as the top group in rock and roll history. Yet their significance as a band extends beyond numbers to encompass their innovations in the recording studio. The Beatles’ legacy as a concert attraction, during their harried passage from nightclubs to baseball stadiums, is distinguished primarily by the deafening screams of female fans overcome by the group’s very appearance.Consequently, the Beatles began to indulge their creative energies in the studio, layering sounds and crafting songs in a way no one had attempted before. The results included such musically expansive and lyri cally sophisticated albums as Rubber Soul (1965) and Revolver (1966). For various reasons, ranging from safety concerns to frustration that no one could hear or was listening, the Beatles retired from touring after a San Francisco concert on August 29, 1966 (Webmaster 2007)†. The legacy created by the Beatles was emphasized by their overwhelming turnouts in concert acts and unrivalled airtime sustenance.Screams from fans were deafening as they perform and so much adulation for them is primarily characterized from their passage from nightclubs to baseball stadiums. Games even major league championship series never packed a stadium like the Beatles does. The adrenaline and the fame the members are feeling transcribed in the studio as they were writing more beautiful songs. Inspired by their vast success the group kept on living up to the expectations of the fans. As the fame and fortune continued, their popularity went to their heads. They started to feel very secured with what they have.Thus prompting them to utter words and do things that fans started to wonder and think of what really the band members personality in real life is. The Start of the Fall As the band started touring the world, it had the Philippines on their itinerary. It was a national government and presidential custom that whenever a well renowned person or persons came and visit the country, the Palace opened its doors for them. â€Å"While in the Philippines, the Beatles had been invited to Malacanang Palace by Imelda Marcos. The Beatles have stated that they never agreed to appear at this reception.They remained unaware of any problem until the next morning. As they turned on their hotel television, the Beatles learned of accidentally snubbing the First Lady by not appearing at the palace. The Beatles also found that the government-run media was now fueling a firestorm against them via television news reports of the snub. There was a scene at the airport as the Beatles attempted to l eave the country (Spangler 1966)†. Being head of the country, President Marcos ordered that the band will not be escorted by the police. They will have no protection for whatever happens to them while in the Philippine soil.The snub incident was televised nationally and created a nationwide backlash at the Beatles. Irate fans began to hate the group. They stand and waited for the group so they can make negative comments on them. The group were on their own heading to Manila International Airport. A hostile crowd greeted the group with kicks and punches. The money they earned from the concert was ordered to be given back or else they can not leave the country. After the incident in the Philippines in 1966, outrage of criticisms for the Beatles grew wider. United States, where they had a huge popularity and success, cried foul.Social conservatives and religious leaders were pissed by their pronouncements. â€Å"On July 31, 1966, John Lennon’s comments on the state of Chr istianity – made in March, but only lately picked up in the U. S. – spark protests and record burnings on the eve of the Beatles’ 1966 American tour (Webmaster 2007) †. â€Å"While on March 1, 1966, London’s ‘Evening Standard’ publishes an interview with John Lennon in which he states that the Beatles are â€Å"more popular than Jesus now. † The comment provokes several protests, including the burning of Beatles records (Webmaster 2007)†.Lennon then apologised for the words he had spoken. The national apology was done during their concert which turned out to be their last. The group was also partly to be blamed for America’s problem on youth regarding drug addiction. They were saying things that there is a thing as open use of drugs. As they were idolized, fans followed them. They also launch anti-Americanism. The group never performed again in The US. They got back to the studio to record their songs. There was no formal break up but a sort of â€Å"shying away† from the limelight stuff. They had fewer television guestings.The woes continued as the band manager allegedly killed himself from drug overdose. The group never came close to their standing before. Tons of fans, record sales and the hype were all gone. They are just hoping they can win all them back. Their recordings were never their songs before. People are irritated now to their music as albums which came lately were uneasy to hear. Abbey Road album was focused on dirty lyrics. They maintained their integrity as a band but not the popularity they had before The band also used some advanced gadgets to enhanced their melodies.â€Å"Disputes, disagreements and disharmony among band members had been gradually increasing, become especially apparent during the White Album recording sessions. The band's last performance together outside the studio (a promotional event on the roof of Apple Studios) came in January 1969. Their last recording session (for Abbey Road) followed in August (white 2008)†. â€Å"On January 30, 1969, The Beatles make their last performance as a group on the roof of the Apple building during the filming of ‘Let It Be’(Webmaster 2007)†. â€Å"The band's breakup was announced in April 1970, a month before Let It Be was released.Documents filed on December 31, 1970 officially ended the legal entity known as The Beatles (White 2008)†. â€Å"On April 10, 1970, Paul McCartney announced his departure from the Beatles, and the group quietly came to an end. Throughout the Seventies, fans hoped for an eventual reunion, while the group members pursued solo careers with varying degrees of artistic and commercial success (White 2008)†. â€Å"In addition to the 23 albums (counting soundtracks and separate US and UK releases) released during the band's life (1960-1970) there have been more than 150 compilations, recorded interviews and videos issued.Hundreds o f books have been written about their personal lives, their music, and their influence on pop culture and rock music. Their original record label, EMI and the Guinness Book of World Records estimate that more than 1-billion Beatles albums, singles and CDs have been sold worldwide. Authentic Beatles memorabilia continues to command huge sums. Recently an audio tape of a 1974 interview with Lennon sold at auction for more than $38,000. At the same auction, McCartney's handwritten lyrics for â€Å"Maxwell's Silver Hammer† brought $192,000 (White 2008)†.â€Å"On December 8, 1980, John Lennon is shot by a deranged assailant as he and Yoko return to the Dakota after a recording session. He is pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital (Webmaster 2007)†. It was first thought that it was a fan who got disappointed at the group. The group will never be a band again. After long years of the break up, their marketing group of record producers released albums and singles never be fore heard. These songs were never performed live in front of audiences. They were only done in the studios and the only other time that they were intact as a band. Still, the records reap rewards.They also posted record sales for a band not anymore active in the music scene. The fans still loved them for what they have done in the past. They listened to them in the post Beatles, John Lennon era. Their actual fame lasted for over a decade but their legacy and memory lived on. Must have been better after they were gone. Surely, the fans missed them and really wanting them back. The members parted ways and had their individual careers. â€Å"John Lennon released seven albums between 1970 and 1980, the last one just three weeks before he was murdered, at age 40, outside his New York City apartment in December 1980.An additional album, Milk and Honey, was released (in 1984) after Lennon's death. George Harrison released a dozen solo albums (and two with the Traveling Wilburys) and prod uced films through his company, Handmade Films. Harrison died of cancer at the age of 58 in November 2001. Ringo Starr has released nearly two dozen albums and appeared in about the same number of films since the breakup of The Beatles. He continues to tour every few years with his All Starr Band. Paul McCartney has been the most prolific ex-Beatle as a solo artist, with his late wife, Linda and with his band Wings.He continues to tour and record, and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful musician and contemporary songwriter in history (White 2008)†. It was fame who killed this extraordinary group. They were the best at their times. They were praised and worshipped. Fans treated them as first class humans and wanting to see them every time. They were more popular in the country they were visiting that its president. They launch the music industry to the world. Many revolutions were brought about by their success. This group stand out from the o thers.They had set the standards for live acts and airwave category. They even surpassed cinema actors in terms of wooing the female fans. What really brought them down was their ego and so much of self confidence. Much of the blame was not focused on a single member but to the whole band because all agree to what was relayed to the media and to the listeners who were their patrons. They should never get into the act like they were gods and immortal. They thought that the bright lights will always be on them for the rest of the way. It is not always like that. Things change, and all people change based on certain circumstances.Their personalities were different after getting so much adulation and getting lauded by people for almost all of the time. If the pronouncements had not happened, they will still be a band and could have lasted for more decades. This is the problem when people got carried by fame and fortune, they tend to forget who they are and likely will turn out to be a n egatively changed person. They certainly reaped the fruits of their labor but the honor will forever be in doubt. The Beatles’ will forever be remembered as the struggling Quarrymen up to the time they played their last song.After all what happened, they will always be the Beatles that the world listened to and the owner of the songs that played melodies into hearts of music lovers.
